Extending the Overall Life
The easiest way to give your battery an early death is to damage it. And the two most common causes of damage are from overheating and overloading. Here’s how you prevent overheating:
Use a cooling pad when using a notebook computer on your lap.
Avoid propping your laptop on a pillow, blanket, or other soft surface that can heat up.
Clean your desk. It sounds strange, but if you have a dusty, dirty desk, that dust will get into the vents and clog the cooling fan. Once the dust is inside your laptop, it is much harder to remove. You can try blasting it out with canned air, but you run the risk of damaging internal components. You can also remove the vent and clean out the grit, but remember that taking apart your laptop can void the warranty. So clean your desk at least once a week, if not daily.
Never store your laptop in a place where the air temperature exceeds 80 degrees Fahrenheit, such as a hot car or an outdoor patio.
Consider taking your battery out when using your laptop plugged into AC power. Just make sure to keep the contacts clean. If you need to clean them, use rubbing alcohol.
For lithium ion batteries, you do not need to discharge them fully and recharge constantly. Since they don’t have the same “memory” as older nickel-metal hydride batteries, it is actually better to discharge a lithium ion only partially before recharging. You need to do a full discharge only about every 30 charges.
Overloading a battery occurs when you use an AC adapter that has a higher wattage than that specified on the laptop (and battery), or if the circuitry of the laptop consistently overcharges the battery. If you’re using a replacement or spare adapter, make sure the wattage matches your laptop’s within the specified voltage range. In the worst-case scenario, overloading can also damage your motherboard.

Take care of your laptop battery and ensure that it will be ready to work properly when you need it most. Some general tips for laptop care include: avoid extreme temperatures, don’t leave a laptop outside in cold weather or leave it in a hot car. Cold batteries can’t create very much power and hot batteries will discharge very quickly. Use electrical power when available to keep battery charged. Don’t let your laptop go for long periods of time without using the battery.
Ni-Cad (Nickel Cadmium battery), and Ni-MH (Nickel Metal Hydride) were once highly used having 1.2 Volts per cell.
Li-Ion (Lithium-ion) have now taken their place having 3.6-3.7 Volts per cell and are much more practical for today’s power hungry notebooks. They have more power, higher voltage, less self drain, less weight, and can be smaller for the power you get. You will also not find the memory problems previous batteries were known for. I guess the only drawback is they’re more expensive.
Smart/dumb batteries
You will find most if not all of today’s notebooks use Li-Ion smart batteries. The fact that it’s smart means it has circuits that report its charge level so you can estimate the battery life remaining or when it’s about to run out.
Batteries are over-all measured in “mAh” (Milliamps/hour)
There are many things you can do to increase your battery life at the cost of performance, comfort, and features. What many will do that need to maximize their battery life for example if they’re going on a trip, is get their settings in order before heading out. Here’s a few things you can do:
Adjust LCD brightness
Most notebooks will be set to dim the LCD automatically by default from the factory. Unplug your system to check the brightness to verify. Some will do it over a few seconds slowly so you don’t notice it so you have to watch carefully. If you feel you could deal with the display being even more dimmed, then (Windows) right click your desktop background, go to “Properties”, then click the “Settings” tab at the top. Click “Advanced” and you will often find your settings for brightness in there which can vary depending on the graphics chipset and software on your system. Sometimes you can find the graphics control panel or settings hot link in your lower right hand system tray depending on software.
Turn it down to whatever you’re comfortable with. The LCD is one of the biggest battery hogs most laptops face keeping fed.
So try to know more information about your laptop batteries and keep it used longer.

Google Tech Talk January 14, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Bradley Voytek. There is a massive, relatively uncoordinated effort underway to map out the relationship between brain and behavior. Human neuroimaging experiments abound with approximately 30000 neuroimaging studies performed in 2008 alone. Most of the data from these experiments are analyzed on an individual desktop or small, local cluster. Neuroimaging data contains information about neural activity in both time and space and can easily exceed 1GB per subject. In order to analyze the functional properties of neuronal networks these data can be decomposed in a variety of ways (behavioral condition, principal and independent components, phase and frequency components, graphs and digraphs, etc.). This exponentially increases analysis time and database sizes creating bottlenecks in the analysis work flow. I will discuss a variety of neuroimaging methods in terms of the sources of the signals measured, what these signals actually inform us about how the brain gives rise to cognition and behavior, and how this information can inform medical diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore I will highlight how advances in computational processing have improved data analysis and discuss the computational roadblocks that impede research progress..
